The FIBA Basketball World Cup returns to Europe: France will host the 2031 edition.
The FIBA Basketball World Cup is returning to Europe: the 2031 edition will be hosted by France, with Paris set to stage the final phase. After three consecutive editions in Asia (China 2019, Philippines–Japan–Indonesia 2023, and Qatar 2027), the tournament will come back to the continent for the first time since 2014, when it was held in Spain.
The event will take place from August 29 to September 14, 2031, across three cities: Lille, Lyon, and Paris. It will mark the first time France hosts the competition, with the ambition of contending for the title. In the last two editions, the French national team has secured back-to-back bronze medals and continues to rise on the international stage, currently featuring around 20 NBA players, including star Victor Wembanyama.
Although this will be France’s first time hosting the World Cup, the country has a strong track record of organizing major FIBA events. In recent years, Lille hosted EuroBasket 2015, Bourges staged the 2020 FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament, Strasbourg co-hosted EuroBasket Women 2021, and Lyon-Villeurbanne was among the venues for the qualifying tournaments for the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup.
