Ergin Ataman Sends a Message: “We Proved to All of Europe That We’re One of the Best Teams”

Following a brilliant start at EuroBasket 2025, Turkish national team head coach Ergin Ataman commented on his team’s convincing victory over host nation Latvia, in what was the opening matchup in Group A. Ataman praised his players’ control and composure, emphasizing the importance of a strong start. “I think when you play on the road, the beginning is very important. So we started the game very well with great defense, we moved the ball inside and out, and we took control of the game,” said the 59-year-old coach. He then added, “I think we played perfect basketball. A very important win for us. I believe we showed all of Europe that we are one of the best teams in this tournament.” Now 1–0 in the round-robin format, Turkey will face Czechia on Friday at the Xiaomi Arena. “Before the game, I saw that everyone thought Latvia was the favorite. But I told my players that we are a strong team—and we proved it on the court,” Ataman continued.
Kenan Sipahi, the 30-year-old point guard, played a crucial role in the win, scoring 13 points in the first half and finishing with 19 overall, going a perfect 5-for-5 from three-point range, 1-for-1 from two, and 2-for-2 at the free throw line. “We share the ball. Everyone plays for the team,” Sipahi said. “We know who our offensive and defensive leaders are, and everything else. It’s just one game. We’ll try to do our best in the upcoming matches.” Latvia, hoping to bounce back from the loss, will host fellow Baltic nation Estonia on Friday.
