Stephen Curry looks beyond 40: “I want to decide when to retire”

In today’s NBA landscape, it’s increasingly common to see veteran players contributing at a high level well into their 40s. Stephen Curry, who will turn 40 in nearly three seasons, is already thinking ahead. In an interview with Mark Medina of EssentiallySports, the Golden State Warriors superstar said: “I want to have the option. If I’m still able to play at a high level, I want it to be my decision and not something imposed by others. That’s crucial.”
Curry is about to enter his 17th NBA season after earning a spot on the All-NBA Second Team and his 11th All-Star selection last year. In 70 games, he averaged 24.5 points in 32.2 minutes, shooting an impressive 39.7% from three, leading the league in both attempts and makes. The secret to his longevity? A disciplined and highly focused offseason regimen. His trainer, Brandon Payne, revealed that this summer was dedicated to strength training and improving decision-making speed in game situations.
“It all comes from the foundational work I started a long time ago,” Curry explained. “I still love this game. I’m fortunate to have a team around me that helps keep my body flexible and prevents injuries. The rest is about willpower and determination. I want to keep going as long as I have the strength.”
