'Enormous enthusiasm’ for NBA Europe: Silver opens door to EuroLeague partnership
During today’s press conference, held after the NBA Board of Governors approved expansion with two new franchises in Las Vegas and Seattle, Adam Silver also addressed the topic of NBA Europe:
“Mark Tatum provided an update to the Board of Governors regarding the creation of a new league in Europe. There was no vote. We have several banks working on this opportunity — JP Morgan and another organization called Raine — engaging with institutions interested in 12 different markets. More than 100 organizations are involved in this process. There is enormous enthusiasm. We have ongoing open dialogues with existing clubs in European basketball, through FIBA, the various national leagues, and the EuroLeague.”
The arrival of Chus Bueno as CEO of the EuroLeague — as previously reported — appears to push toward a potential partnership between the two entities. And Silver himself acknowledged that collaboration would be the ideal scenario:
"Chus [Bueno] used to be a colleague of mine at the NBA for many years. I think for the better of European basketball, the best outcome would be if we come together with the EuroLeague. And we came up with a systematic approach to growing the game throughout Europe. And that means complementing the country leagues, working together with the EuroLeague, and with the FIBA".
