Marco Bonamico passes away at 68

The basketball world is in mourning following the passing of Marco Bonamico at the age of 68. Nicknamed "The Marine", Bonamico played from 1975 to 1995 wearing the jerseys of Virtus Bologna, Fortitudo Bologna, Mens Sana Siena, Olimpia Milano, Napoli Basket, Forlì, and Udine. He represented the Italian national team in 154 games between 1977 and 1985, winning a silver medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympics and gold at the 1983 EuroBasket in France. His club achievements include two Italian league titles and two Italian Cups, all won with Virtus Bologna.
Marco had been hospitalized for several weeks at Bellaria Hospital. The initial medical tests were not promising, but he fought as he always had—relentlessly. “I haven’t just lost a friend, I’ve lost a brother,” said Renato Villalta, captain of the Virtus Bologna team that won the historic tenth league title.
