EuroBasket 2025: Celtics’ Center Neemias Queta Dominates as Portugal Upsets Czech Republic

An early upset shook the opening day of EuroBasket 2025 as Portugal defeated the Czech Republic 62-50. Leading the charge was a spectacular performance from Neemias Queta, the Boston Celtics’ big man, who posted an impressive 23 points and 18 rebounds. This victory marks Portugal’s first win at the European Championships since 2007, nearly 20 years ago.
Queta’s 18 rebounds also tied the seventh-highest single-game rebound record in EuroBasket history. The game was low-scoring, with Portugal pulling away in the second half thanks to a 30-21 run. Alongside Queta, Rafael Lisboa contributed 15 points. The Czech team, hampered by the absence of Vesely and Satoransky, struggled offensively, shooting just 6-of-30 from three-point range and 16-of-55 overall. Vit Krejci was the only Czech player in double digits with 10 points, but it wasn’t enough to avoid the upset.
