After retiring and spending a year as a player development coach, JJ Barea will begin his career as an assistant coach alongside David Adelman with the Denver Nuggets. Recently turned 41, Barea played in the NBA from 2005 to 2019, mostly with the Dallas Mavericks, with whom he won the NBA championship in 2011. Nuggets head coach David Adelman was an assistant with the Minnesota Timberwolves when Barea played there from 2011 to 2014, and has now decided to bring him onto his coaching staff.

The Nuggets are completely revamping their staff. Also joining is Rodney Billups, brother of former NBA star and current Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups. Additionally, there is reported interest in Jared Dudley, another former NBA player currently serving as an assistant with the Dallas Mavericks. Denver has received permission to interview Dudley, though it remains unclear whether he will accept the Nuggets’ offer or stay in Texas.
