Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Bucks: pivotal meeting looms over future

Rumors pushing Giannis Antetokounmpo to leave Milwaukee for various—sometimes far-fetched—destinations are becoming increasingly hard to ignore, especially since the player himself has hinted that, after 12 years, 859 games, and 20,538 points scored in a Bucks jersey, it might be time for a change of scenery. NBA insider Chris Haynes reports that Giannis is expected to meet with the team next week:
“I’ve been told that the Bucks already reached out to Giannis Antetokounmpo this morning. Sources tell me a meeting is expected to be scheduled for the middle of next week. That’s when Giannis will have a chance to sit down with the Bucks’ front office and talk about the direction of the team. There’s a lot to address this offseason.
Knowing Giannis personally—one of the fiercest competitors in this league, a guy with tremendous ambition—he wants more titles. All he wants is to be in a position to compete for a championship. This will be a very, very important meeting next week.”
Antetokounmpo and the Bucks won the NBA title in 2021, but things have gone downhill since then, largely due to injuries to key players like Khris Middleton, Damian Lillard, and Giannis himself. The team’s chances of winning another title anytime soon appear slim.
So, if Antetokounmpo wants to win another championship—or two—leaving the Bucks this offseason might be in his best interest. The 30-year-old would have no shortage of suitors if he were to request a trade and Milwaukee decided to honor it.
Antetokounmpo remains one of the NBA’s top players. He just finished the 2024–25 season averaging 30.4 points, 11.9 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 0.9 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game. Players like the nine-time All-Star rarely become available on the trade market.
