Celtics Legend Paul Pierce Arrested on DUI Charges
Paul Pierce was arrested late Tuesday night on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) in Los Angeles, according to a statement from the California Highway Patrol (CHP). The Celtics legend was found asleep in his SUV on the 101 Freeway at 10:30 p.m., after police responded to a multi-vehicle accident in the area and temporarily closed traffic lanes. When the lanes reopened, Pierce’s Range Rover was stopped in traffic south of the crash site.
“When officers approached, they found the driver, later identified as Paul Pierce, asleep at the wheel,” the CHP said in a statement. “Officers observed signs of alcohol impairment and conducted a DUI investigation.” Pierce, 47, was arrested on DUI charges and the case is pending review by the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office. He was cited and released, according to NBC4 Los Angeles.
Pierce, a 10-time NBA All-Star, spent 19 seasons in the league after being selected 10th overall by the Celtics in the 1998 NBA Draft. He played the first 15 years of his career in Boston, winning NBA Finals MVP in 2008 when the Celtics defeated the Lakers 4-2. Pierce retired in 2017 and was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021. Since retiring, he has been active in sports media, working with ESPN and Fox Sports, co-hosting podcasts with former teammate Kevin Garnett, and living in Los Angeles.
The Hall of Famer also made headlines during the Celtics’ 2025 playoff run in May, promising to go to the Fox Sports studio if the Celtics lost Game 2 against the Knicks, which happened after Boston surrendered another 20-point lead — a moment Pierce documented on social media.
