The highly anticipated series between Virtus Bologna and Olimpia Milano kicks off tonight — the “Derby d’Italia” of basketball, taking place this year in the semifinals rather than the final. Italian newspapers are buzzing not only about the present, but also about what the future holds for both clubs. In particular, La Repubblica (Bologna edition) features an in-depth look by Walter Fuochi outlining upcoming changes for both teams ahead of next season. This could mark the final chapter in Italy for stars like Tornike Shengelia and Nikola Mirotic, both expected to leave the country. Meanwhile, the transfer market is already heating up: Virtus is set to bring in Saliou Niang from Trento, along with Davide Casarin, while Quinn Ellis is reportedly heading to Milano.

For Olimpia Milano, the dream signing is Marko Guduric — fresh off a EuroLeague title with Fenerbahce — although as of now, his future seems more tied to Istanbul than anywhere else. Should that option fall through, Milano could pivot to Darius Thompson, reflecting the team’s urgent need at the point guard position. With Josh Nebo now fully recovered from injury, he is seen as an internal reinforcement. Additional moves are expected, including a new big man — possibly Devin Booker — and a shooting guard to replace Fabien Causeur.

Virtus Bologna, on the other hand, is preparing for a substantial roster overhaul. The club appears to have deals in place for Derrick Alston (from Spain) and Zach Seljaas (from Germany). Isaïa Cordinier is likely on his way out, aiming for the NBA. Will Clyburn’s future is uncertain, while Ante Zizic remains under contract. The club will try to retain Morgan. Contracts for Achille Polonara and Marco Belinelli are expiring, while Pajola and Hackett remain under contract. Youngsters like Mouhamet Diouf and Nicola Akele are expected to be confirmed as part of the rotation.
